The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER WEDNESDAY, JUNE 9, 1915. POLITICAL.
The result or the Bay of Islands byelection was not unexpected, and Mr Stewart gains the seat for the Government with a substantial majority in his favor. If anything more need be said about the matter it is simply that
it is lamentable that the pettiness of Party strife must yet again be thrust forward at such a time. It is going rather far to assert, as Mr Massey has done, that the election proves that the Government has the confidence of the electors: for Mr Massey's sake we hope it is so. General disgust with the miserable tactics which seem inevitable under the wretched worn-out Party system, and a shrinking from the possible plunging of the country into the turmoil of another General Election, is likely to have a great deal more to do with keeping the Government in office just now than anything else. The platform politician of to-day is fond of telling us all about the will of the people and how it is exercised in this enlightened land, but we do not appear to have advanced far upon the indifferent political methods of our forefathers. When we have reached a stage 01 progress that will have no more to do with the obsolete and played-out system of Government by Party, we shall have made some rt'al advancement on the track to honest Government for the people. "While Party rule survives it will always bo that Party interests are pal amount, no matter what Party politicians profess to represent. Statesmen are all too rare to Ik l considered in the case.
