Vice-Admiral Nicol has had a brilliant career, and is Vice-Admiral in the service.. Admiral Guspratte is being retained 1 as second in command. ■yv _____ . ■ GALLIPOLI PENINSULA. THE AUSTRALASIANS DUC-IN. .London, June 5. Tene.dqs'reports that night attacks on the Australian trendies continue, but in the; daytime, apart from shrapnel, the enemy’s' main activity is confined to cleverly concealed snipers. The Australasian position is impregnable. They have dug themselves in much against their own , inclination but have resigned- themselves to trench warfare. The enemy maintains at night-time a constant aimless fusillade with the intention, presumably, to forestal any advance on our part. Parties of snipers crawl past the British /and French lines, and hide hi trees or empty trenches, and snipe isolated ■ officers and then rob them. Some were caught with their pockets full of British and French money. A combined general assault on the Turkish positions at Gallipoli has begun. ON THE HEIGHTS OF KRITHIA. * Athens, June 6. The Turks, on Monday, vigorously, attacked the Australasians on the heights of Krithia, and a violent bat-.j tie lasted twelve hours. After the Australian counter-attack the Turksabandoned the- summit. • The Australasians’ victory consolidated the Allies’ position on the peninsula. The Australasians particularly distinguished themselves fighting for the heights of Krithia. The Turkish casual ties were ten thousand. The Turks obtained a twelve ho,urs’ armistice to bury their dead.
