Tiie recruiting office is not without its humours it' a story told to a Lyttolton Times reporter is true. It is stated that a week or'so ago, in response to the urgent call for men, one patriot walked from somewhere near Akarou to Little ttiver and then to Christchureh, where he proceeded to the recruiting office. But there Ins career was checked, and, by the irony of fate, he was refused because rsoiue fault in liis feel, the examiner informing him that ho would not be able to stand a long march. The patriot, indignant at the suggestion, explained that lie had walked in to Christchurcli and added that he would walk back. lie then added, as ail afters-thought : ''And you tell Kitchener and Jimmy Allen that if they V'-it mo they'll have to send a motor ear next time."
At the Farmers' Conference at Christchurcli on Thursday .Mr (<• W. Lead ley, on behalf of the .Vdihurfon branch, moved the following remit, which was adoptod:—"That, in view of the expiry of the term of the Hon. Thomas .Mackenzie's appointment as High Commissioner for New Zealand. we strongly urge upon the Government his reappointment to the position. The conspicuous ability, the energy and capacity, together with his wide knowledge of business affairs, finance, etc., ami his unremitting vigilance in matters affecting the interest of New ZoaJand products have given great satisfaction to the. farmers and mercantile community here; and, further, the experience lie. has already gained, and the special needs of the country at this juncture are additional reasons why Mr Mackenzie should be continued in office as High Commissioner for .Now Zealand.'' Mr i). -Jones alone voted against the remit.
