AUCKLAND WINTER MEETINC. (Notes by Cicero.) The forthcoming Winter Meeting of the Auckland Racing Club promises to excel all previously held by that enterprising body. The acceptances numerically are easily a record, whilst the class of horses engaged are of the best.

i Of the fourteen acceptors for the Maiden Steeplechase, General Wenb and Dogger Bank stand out prominently. Before the season closes the former is sine to play a leading part in more notable events.

No fewer than thirty-five paid up for the Jervois Handicap. Kauri King, Nicomar, and Combustion should each run a creditable seven furlongs. The horses engaged in the Maiden Hurdles are not a good lot, and the Taranaki-owned Harbor Light should make the event interesting. Monathol will possibly be the hardest to beat. •

■' The next event on the programme is the Great Northern Hrudles, of £1250, two miles and a-half. Admiral Soult heads the list, and by some is given a chance second to none. Hereford, who follows, can have no chance on Wanganui form. Tragedy King is | a useful horse, but will be troublec4 by the distance. Black Northern ran a great \race lit Wanganui, and was running on at the right end, but is absolutely unreliable. He will be ridden by that good horseman, Traill, in whose hands he may run generously. Royal Arms is not overburdened with weight, and must have a chance. Morecambe is much fancied by his party, but must surely want a race to sharpen him up. Corrie, according to the writers' idea, is the pick of the handicap. She is very well, and her connections are confident. Of the lighter weights "El Gallo and Queen's Post must have undeniable chances, although the latter does not fence too well. Corrie, El Gallo ,and Black .Northern should provide a capital con-l test.

A number of high class handicap horses are engaged in the Cornwall Handicap, the winner of which should come from the top weights. Emperador, Colonel Soult, and Ladoga are a likelv trio.

The majority of those engaged in the Hunt Club Hurdles are of unknown quantity, but Takanini and Fireaway should run well.

j i..e'lrst day's programme «ill close [with the Members'" 'Handicap, in which event a number of fast- ..printers are engaged, including the Taranaki hacks iGlenroy, Tyson and Zion. Bimeter, .Tatterley and Glenroy should be in the fighting line.

! Mr A. Hansen, Manaia, has purchased tlie fast Canterbury trotter, Ripon Child, from Mr Clarkson, ~f Kicearton, a prominent man in southern racing circles, the figure being £135, states the Witness. Ripon ! Child is a, stallion, rising eight years, and has some of the biggest trots in ;tho south to his name. He is entered (this week for some engagements in ithe Christchurch trots
