STRATFORD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MEETING OF THE EXECUTIVE.

A meeting of the Executive Committee of the Chamber of 'Commerce was held last evening in the Fife Brigade Hall. There were present:— Messrs .1. 15. Richards (chairman), \V. A. Hewitt. K. Jackson, W. I'. Kirkwood. 1). J. Malone, 1.1. R. kawrence, and A. V. Grant. "BRITISH-MAM-: GOODS.''

A letter was received from the Patea Chandler of Commerce recommending the Stratford Chamber to recommend local bodies to stipulate the use of only .British and British-Colonial goods in letting contracts.—Several spoke favouring this proposal, and Mr W. P. Kirkwood moved that the Chamber recommend the use of British and Bri-tish-Colonial goods to the local bodies. This was seconded by Mr D. J. Malone and carried.

DOMINION CONFERENCE. ! A letter was received from the Wellington Chamber stating that a Conference of delegates throughout tho Dominion was proposed to be held in Wellington in July or August.—Speakers were lirmly of the opinion that Stratford should be represented, and Mr Kirkwood moved that if such a Conference be held the Chairman (Mr J. B. Richards) be appointed to represent Stratford.—Seconded by Mr Grant. TATU-TAHORA TELEPHONE. A letter from the Postmaster-Gen-eral was read, in which it was stated that the telephone line from Tatu to Tahora could not be erected at present, as it meant extra work for the authorities to keep a single line of 18 miles length in order.—'Members of the Chamber considered this reply as bilking the whole question, and, in view of the importance and necessity of this line, decided on the motion of Mr Kirkwood. to further urge on the Minister the necessity of the line. STRATFORD POST OFFICE. A further letter from the Postmas-ter-General stated that the erection of a new Post Office could not be proceeded with until after the war.—Speakers pointed <mt that public works were being gone on with in various parts of the country, and there was no reason why Stratford should 1)0 neglected. The Post Office here was a disgrace and of little use to a town like Stratford.—Mr W. P. Kirkwood moved, and Mr (.'rant seconded, that a letter be forwarded to the Postmaster-General stating that the erection of a new Post Office is of such vital importance to the postal business of the town that there should be no further delay in erecting the building.—This motion was carried unanimously. WAITIRI ROAD.

The Waitiri Road question was discussed, and the necessity of the construction of this road at once was fully shown. The Chairman moved that the Chamber write to the Minister for Lands and the ••Minister -f or Public Works urging the immediate construction of the road.—.Mr Hewitt seconded the motion ,which was carried. RAILWAY STATION APPROACH. The .Mayor asked the Chamber's cooperation with the Council in urgingupon the Railway Department to resume the lease of the premises recently destroyed by tire for the purpose of improving the entrance to the station.—The Chairman moved that a sub-committee, consisting of ■Messrs Kirk wood and Jackson and the mover he appointed to confer with the Council re the resumption of the lease by the Railway Department.—Mr Hewitt, seconded the motion, which was carried. FINANCIAL. Accounts amounting to £1 16s Cd were passed for payment.
