Why cannot the spirit which would enable a man to write "Stratford has done better” be the standard to aim at? With regard to the Belgian Relief Pun cl the question of making a special effort was being discussed, and has now been deferred till the question of the Hospital Ship has been disposed of. Mr Kirkwood states that the Hospital Ship question is one that will ‘go tty the hearts of the people without any special demonstrations. Everyone will agree with him, and everyone I am sure will also agree that hearts are much easier to reach than pockets. The response to the Patriotic Committee’s appeal has hern splendid, but 1 beg to assert that ! a ’ a demonstration been hold on .Saturday, the results would have been better. With regard to recruiting, I did not -ay, neither did I wish to infer that fp'atlord hud not done well in this pat'icular matter. What I wished to pomt was that the town and district were not getting credit for what, had been done. There art 1 other points in connection with recruiting 1 would have liked to mention, but as we have Mr Kirkwood s assurance that flu-* Patriotic Committee is in touch with the Defence Minister on this subject, the question is no doubt being safeguarded.
