POISONING THE WATER. DIABOLICAL GERMAN ACT. Times and Sydney Sun Service. (Received 8 a.m.) London, May 21. It is reported that the Germans have poisoned with arsenic the river in the vicinity of Ypres with the object to killing the British troops. SHARP ARTILLERY DUELS. Paris, May 21.. Official: There have been sharp artillery duels between Nieuport and Arras. Two German aviators were brought down, one by the British and the other by ns. We progressed by mining operations at Beausejour as far as the enemy’s trenches. We repulsed an attack at Bagatelle and carried further trenches at Hois d’Ailly. PIPE LINES FOR CAS. Berne, May 21. Travellers from Alsace declare the Germans are installing pipe lines connected with generating stations some distance behind the front to emit vast volumes of poisonous gas when the French advance. There is a similar arrangement on the Austrian frontier, where the entire region is tunnelled and pipes are laid.
FRENCH PROGRESS REPORT.
(Received 9 a.m.) London, May 21. A French Embassy communique states; The Germans gained a foothold in the French trenches northward of i'pi-es and eastward of the Yser canal, »ut an immediate counter-attack drove hem back, enabling the French to occupy some of the ground beyond the original position, while we took 120 orisoncrs. The British made some progress northward of La Bassee.
