LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The Hackness lias arrived at San Francisco, states n to-day. A steer escaped from the Railway Yards yesterday afternoon and charged up Fenton Street. Except for making a desperate and successful rear attack upon one of its would-be capturers and providing some excitement. the animal did no harm, and was safely taken hack to its own lines.
Mr I’. S. Whitcomhe, secretary to the Taranaki Education Board, has received an intimation from the Minister of Education that it is the King’s wish that beyond the closing of schools on the King’s Birthday and Empire Day no ceremonies should be held. The message adds that nothing beyond the Hying of flags is desired.
The values of exports ol New Zealand products during the week ended May ISth, were as follows:-—Butter £25,162, cheese £11,275, frozen lamb £6l ,039. frozen mutton £59,186, frozen beef, etc., £39,65-1. gold £9l 15. grain and pulse £17,517, hides and skins £19.324, kauri gum £2504, flax and tow £14,827, tallow £45,661, timber £6540, wool £82.079. The Wanganui Education Board on Wednesday passed a resolution applying to the Education Department to disestablish the Mawera District High School and to establish a technical high school. The Board has imwe previous efforts to disestablish the present school, but with no success. A sub-committee was set up to go into details of staffing, curriculum and other matters.
At the first meeting of the Stratford Patriotic Committee after Mr. J. W. Boon’s election as Mayor his name was added to the Executive of that bodv.
A serious accident occurred at Te Wei'a last, eevning. As Miss C. Anderson was alighting from a trap at the Te Wora Hall, the horse took
fright and bolted . When the animal was stopped, it was found that Miss Anderson was severely injured and had to be brought into the Stratford Hospital. Upon inquiries being made this morning, Miss Anderson is reported to be as well as could be expected.
The result of a match fired at the miniature rifle range last Monday between teams selected from the ‘Stratford Home Defence Corps, was as follows:—McMillan’s team; McMillan 64, W. A “special” to the Stratford Evening Post to-day, from Te Kniti, states that considerable perplexity has been caused throughout the Taumarnnni electorate by the issue of a roll containing the erasures of names of person's alleged not to have voted at lasi election. Over two thousand are struck off, yet it lias been abundantly proved that hundreds of those struck off voted, and amongst them arc many deputy-returning officers.
During the past fortnight a largo number of volunteers have been enrolled. but it is understood a large percentage failed to pass the medical test. Intending recruits who have such defects as had teeth, should have these seen to, thus enabling the doctor to pass the applicants. Many recruits have slight complaints and defects such as this and which van easily lie recitifled. A great number of stalwart fellows volunteer, hut are rejected often to the surprise of themselves and their friends.
Dr. Barclay, Medical Superintendent of the Wellington Hospital, complained to tlie Board on Wednesday that the military demands for nurses and doctors had already weakened the strength of his staff, and the position threatened to become alarmingly acute. He suggested, in the interests of the patients, that the Government should he asked to prevent further drains on the hospitals of the Dominion. He did not know where to turn in the immediate future for house surgeons and nurses. Private medical men would have to be asked to help.
Registrations in the Taranaki district for the past 12 weeks to date have reached 786, an average 65 per week, which is believed to he a record for any group (sub-district) in the Dominion. As many as 250 registrations have been received in three days since New Zealand took part in the initial attack at Dardanelles, showing that, pro rata of population, the Taranaki group leads the Dominion in registrations. A splendid type of young men is coming forward in great numbers from all parts of this district states a P.A. wire from Hawera today.
Great patriotic enthusiasm 'exists throughout the King Country (states a telegram to-day from Te This week a largely-packed meeting was held at To Kuiti, at which stirring addresses were given by the Mayor (Mr. W. Napier), Mr. W. T. Jennings, and others, and the result has been that large numbers of young men are giving in their names to the Defence authorities. The Druids of the King''Country made a presentation last night to Bro. Dr. McCrae, who is proceeding to Egypt, of a valuable case of instruments which will he useful ou the battlefield. The presentation was made by Past Grand President W. T. Jennings.
Captain Thomas, of the Salvation Army Boys’ Home, Elthani, was given a farewell social at the Home by the officers of the Home and members of the Salvation Army Corps Band at Elthaom, with whom the Captain has for some time been associated. As educational officer at the Home, Captain Thomas has done splendid work among (he boys during the five and a half years since the inception of the Home. He arrived in Elthani with a sixth standard proficiency certificate, but he worked hard until he was able to pass Matriculation with honors. Besides Ids scholastic accomplishments., he sat for a Lieutenacy in the territorials, and was again successful, and has held a commission lor some time. The next step in the Captain’s career is a call to the front in connection with the war, and tins morning he loft by the express for Wellington as a Lieutenant in His Majesty’s service. All will wish the officer every success and trust he will return safely.
