PERSONAL.

Mr Thomas Mitchell, who was wellknown in meat-industry circles, in Wanganui, died yesterday at the ago of 6.'s years.

Mr W. G. B. Bassett yesterday resigned the chairmanship of the Wanganui Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. Mr T. H. Battle was elect. ed.

The death occurred at Petone last night of Rev. William Kirk, a wellknown .Methodist missionary, in his ninetieth year. The Press Association states that he had only been confined to his bed for two days. Deceased arrived in the Colony in 1846, and was afterwards stationed in many parts of the Dominion, returning to Petone in 1885. In 1848 he married the eldest daughter of Rev. John Hobbs.

Lieutenant W. F. Wilson, Stratford, has been empowered by the Defence Department to enrol men in Stratford who desire to join the Expeditionary Force. Intending recruits therefore need not travel to Hawera and New Plymouth to enrol. Lieutenant Grey, when in town, will -ontinue to enrol men, but as bis duties call him to other parts of the district, the Defence Office is closed for a few days in the week. Intending recruits who apply to Lieutenant Wilson during Lieutenant Grey's absence will be duly enrolled.

Mi' J. R. McDonald, a well-known horse-owner of Levin, dropped dead while walking with a companion near Moutoa Gardens, ■ Wanganui, last night. Death was attributed to heart failure. A Press Association message to-day states that deceased had not been in the best of health for the last few years. About twelve months ago be spent some time in Australia for the benefit of bis health, and returned much improved. He was a keen sportsman, and owned several t-cehorsos well-known on the Xew Zealand Turf. He was a member of the Horpwhenua County Council from 1902 to 1905, and a member of the Horowhenua Pacing Club, besides holding interests in many companies in tlie district. He was the largest land-holder in the Horowhenua district, the estate of "Heatherlet" running about twenty thousand sheep. Deceased was fifty-six years of age. He leaves a widow and family of six, there being four sous and two daughters.
