SPORTING.

WANGANUI RACES. (Notes by Cicero). Splendid racing should he witnessed at Wanganui to-morrow, when the jumping season will open. Ihe class engaged in the flat events is particularly strong, and a number of the very best handicap horses in the Dominion will measure strides. Class is well represented in the jumping events also, and all that is now wanted to make the fixture a great success is good weather, of which there is every prospect at present. The programme will open with the Borough Handicap, in which event a number of last sprinters are engaged. Bimeter, Veronal and King Lupin may provide a good contest. A number of good jumpers will saddle up for the • Hack Steeplechase. Soporific and Urey Renown are both fast for two miles, but the former may stay on the better. The horses engaged in the Wanganui Steeplechase are not as good as in many former years, but nevertheless a fine race should eventuate. Jackman, Daylight 1 Bill and Leapuki appear well handicapped. The majority of horses engaged in tlie Kaitoke Hurdles are untried. Vascular and Jollie Fille are fast and are reputed to lie good fencers, and should run prominently. The acceptors for the Century Hurdles are a splendid lot, and the race should he hard to win. Birkfnl, Black Northern, and Hereford are a formidable trio that must take settling. The meeting of Emperador, Merry Roe and company in the Connolly Handicap will he worth witnessing. The top-weights are particularly well handicapped, and despite the fact that a number of fair light-weights are engaged, the writer will be surprised if Emperador, Bonny Helen, and .Merry Roe are not in the fighting line. The first day’s sport will he brought to a do Sc with the Puma Hack, for which event no less than twenty-two accepted. Uallupin, Client and Master Montoa should receive strong support.
