Air G. Wilkinson, who contested the Bay of Islands seat in 1911 and 1914, states that he will not be a candidate at the coming by-election.

Tiie Stratford County Council this morning passed a vote of sympathy with Mr. and Airs. N. B. Fryday and family, of Ngaere, on the death of their sou, Private E. J. Fryday, in the fighting at the Dardanelles.

Air R. L. AI. Eitto, manager at Napier for the New Zealand Loan and Alercautile Agency Company, has received notice of his promotion to the position of manager of the Christchurch branch, rendered vacant by the death of Air D. A. Baxter.

Stone, of Stratford, has, owing to certain false statements made regarding him, found it necessary to announce that he is a Russian horn in Russia, and lie offers a reward for information that will enable him to prosecute for slander the person cr persons who have maliciously stated he is German.

At the Supreme Court yesterday, before his Honor Air Justice Edwards, in chambers, Air Samuel Strang, of Eltham, was admitted a solicitor, on the motion of Air .1. E. Wilson ; also Air A. Coleman, of Stratford, on the motion of Air R. Spence, and Air Armstrong, of New Plymouth, on the motion of Air Billing.

Nurse B. Rynolds, of the Hawera Hospital, and Nurse Bessie Young, daughter of Air .1. S. Young, of Hawera, have been accepted by the Defence Department for service at the front, and received notice yesterday to leave Wellington to-morrow. Nurse Rynolds was yesterday presented with a travelling bag by her Irieuds in Hawera.
