It, is, of course, impossible to predict what course the Commissioners appointed to take evidence /with regard to the proposed alteration in the Education Districts will take so lar as Taranaki is concerned, but certainly a powerful case was presented to them at New Plymouth yesterday, when several of those well-fitted to speak, and intimately acquainted with the community of interest as it exists, came before the Commissioners. Many very sound and very excellent reasons were adduced to show that the absorption of Taranaki by the Wanganui Education District would not lie in the best interests of Education in Taranaki, and Mr. C. A. Wilkinson’s statement regarding the willingness of Eltham to come into the Taranaki Education District rather than see it abolished is a powerful indication of where the true community of interest lies. Mr H. Trimble, chairman of the Taranaki j Education Board, told the Commissioners that it was the opinion of the, Taranaki Education Board that there should be nine education districts, four in the South Island and five in the North Island. In the South Island, on the school rolls at the end; of 1912 there were roughly 72,000, children, while the number in the j North Island was 1)0,000. 11 thej South Island were divided into lour education districts, each Board would have under its control 18,000 children, and if the North Island were divided into live education districts each hoard would have control of 19,000 children. For 1912 the total number of schools iu the South Island was,, iM round numbers, 1000, and in the North Island 1200. There would accordingly be 200 schools in each dis-, trict. The Taranaki education district consists at present of the coun- | ties of Clifton, Taranaki, Whangamo-j pinna, Egmont and Stratford, and Mr Trimble suggests that there should he added to it the counties of Kawhia, Awakino, Waitomo, West Taupe, Olmra, Waimate West, Eltham, Haw-, era and Pa tea. Such a district might easily he worked Irom New Plymouth. Mr Robert Masters, Mr F. Tyrer and Mr P. Skogluml were also able to point out matters of which the Commissioners could hardly he cognisant without direct evidence. Mr. -1. B. Hiuo said it had been the intention of the Act that a classification scheme should apply to the whole oi the Dominion. He referred to the conference of members of Parliament iu which it had been agreed that Waimate, West and Eltham Counties should he added to the Taranaki district. This • he said, would have been embodied in' the Act had there been the same unanimity in the other districts. Ho could not see why, if there were to he live districts in tbc North Island, | Waikato should he created and Taranaki cut ii]>, nor any one else, for that matter. The report of the Com missioners will he awaited with interest.
