THE RAILWAY STATIOn!'^ \ The .Mayor moved that the Council urge upon the Railway Department to take the property of Mr Wake’s next the Post Office and make,an entrance to the railway station. Cr. Thompson, in seconding, suggested representations bo made to the Chamber of Commerce. Cr. Hunter supported tire motion. Cr. Mills agreed, but stated that a better idea would be to tackle the Railway Departmenot to shift the station altogether; that would ho a more sensible.—(A Councillor: “Impossible-”) —Cr. Mills said other towns had had the station shifted, and tie mentioned Palmerston North and Levin in support of his argument. “This town,” he went on to say, “will not he a town as long as the railway goes through. The sooner it is done the hotter. From the sale of the sections' tile Department would get about sufficient money to pay for the shifting. The Chamber of Commerce should tackle the thing and see if it were not possible to get it clone. As long as the railway is tliore it is a curse to the town. We will never got any decent buildings; there will just be a straight street up to the showgrounds, along one side. 1 think there should he a recommendation from the Council to the Chamber of Commerce in that direction. Cr. Thompson thought the Council should confer with the Chamber of Commerce. Cr, Young suggested there might lie some way to acquire the property, so that they might put up brick walls for fire prevention purposes. The motion was then put to the meeting and carried. Cr. Thompson moved that a committee consisting of His Worship the Mayor, Cr. Rutherford and the mover he a committee to confer with the Chandler of Commerce on the matter. Seconded by Cr. Mills and carried.
