JOTTINGS. Per Press Association. Wellington, May 16. Speaking at the Orphans’ Club on Saturday the Hon. A. L., Herdman made some interesting references to the war. He remarked that it was inspiring to find so many of the young men in a small country like New Zealand offering bodies, brains, and wealth for the service of the King. The rate of recruiting was satisfactory at present, but greater demands would be made in months to come. He was sure when the call came there would be no holding back on the part ol the young men. Some were too old to go to the front. Ho himsell was only a private in the National Reserve, but if opportunity offered there were few ol them that would not go. It was the finest thing in the history ol New Zealand that lb,ooo or 16,000 young men

had gone to fight the Empire's battles. Our very existence was at stake and our liberty in dauber. Our privileges were in dauber oi being taken away, and our every notion ol civilisation must perhaps ho reconstructed. ouless wo (ought what our statesmen and soldiers had suffered to obtain would disappear into the air before a relentless enemy that employed poisonous gases. Mr Herdman said all classes were united in the determination to bring the war to a successlul issue' in the cause of right and honor. The Hon. Dr. Collins, New Zealand representative of the Anaesthetic Fund Committee, has forwarded the sum of £;SGO as a first contribution. He has received the following cable from the Hon. Huia Onslow, of the English committee: “A thousand thanks. Please say part of the contribution is going to the Malta hospital for the New Zealanders wounded in the Dardanelles.” Dr. Collins states that more money is urgently required. Napier, -May 16. A committee • has been formed in Napier for collecting funds for distressed Servians. Already £265 has been received and forwarded to Loudon. The Rev. A. H. Colville, vicar of St. Mary’s, recently offered Iris services as chaplain with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, and he has now been advised that only single chaplains are being taken, and his oiler, therefore, cannot be availed of.
