FOOTBALL.
NEW ZEALAND RUGBY UNION.: The annual meeting oi the New Zealand Rugby Union was held at Wei-i lintgon on Tdiursday night. The president ol the Uaioii (Mr -J. Arueil),! in moving the adoption of the annual report, referred to the success ol the' tour of ihe New Zealand team in Alls-; bralia. Regarding the question oi finance, the executive would have to handle the rein;, very tightly. All must recognise that last year was unique in the annals oi' football, owing to the war. it must bo gratifying to the union to know that so many men were prepared to sacrifice their lives to up- i hold the honor ol the Hag. When the members of the union had such a re-j compen.se as this they were well re-j paid Lor all the time and trouble they had put into the game. He thought it might not be out of place to get into touch with the Defence Department with the object of circularising all the unions in an endeavor to further stimulate recruiting. The meet-
ing should pass a vote of sympatny with the relatives of players who were killed or wounded at the front. The Appeal Council will be located in Wellintgon.and will comprise Messrs Y. ii. Meredith, M. J. Crombie, and A. Camphell (re-elected).
It was decided that the Xorth v. South Island matches bo abandoned this year. The. Management Committee is to be recommended to favoraby consider any suggestion for the removal of suspension from any player who volunteers and is accepted for active service. Some discussion took place on the amount of money to be voted towards school fotoball, and it was finally decided to vote ,£IoU. The following resolution was passed on the motion of the chairman :—"That this meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union wishes to accord its hearty sympathy to the relative's of our boy* who have lost their lives at the front, and hopes that those who have been wounded will soon recover, and be able to to the front again." A letter will be sent to General CJodley to be conveyed to the men at the front congratulating them on their achievement at the Dardanelles.
