WANGANUI RECRUITS WELL. Pku Piiess Association. Wanganui, May 14. Recruiting has been active in Wanganui, 86 being passed in the last ten days, and 12 rejected. Some of the latter were medically unfit. Quite a number are offering who are a quarter of an inch or so under the height, and they are highly indignant at being unable to serve their country. COMMONWEALTH GABLES. CLEAR OF SMALL-POX. United Association. (Received 5.40 a.m.) Sydney, May 14. New South Wales has been declared free of small-pox. LARGE PUBLIC WORKS EXPENDITURE. The Government has granted a large number of public works, involving tbe expenditure of ten millions sterling. The interest is live per centum. A number of the firm’s civil engineers have alreadv arrived.
