THE ESSEX RAID.
DAMAGE FROM INCENDIARY BOMBS. Times and Sydney Son Seuviob. London, May ,11. At Southend an invalided soldier named Linton picked up a bomb and immersed it in a bucket. There were some miraculous escapes. Two babies were in a room where a fatality occurred, but they were uninjured, the bomb penetrating the room within inches of the cot. A dog aroused the family, which rushed out.of the bouse. They were nearly suffocated. The father, carrying the children, fought his way out through blinding smoke. The town was awakened by the droning of engines and a deafening explosion. People rushed outside. The flaring bombs, which lit up the skies, caused great fires, houses blazing and falling and windows being shattered for miles around. . Some of the bombs were haling bombs with trading flames. ZEPPELINS IN THE ADRIATIC. Times and Sydney Sun Service. '■', , London, May 11. A Berlin wireless message says threo German submarines and two Zeppelins have arrived at Pola. (Pola is a port in the Adriatic, fiftysix miles south of Trieste, and is the principal naval station of Austria.) GERMAN RETREATING MOVEMENT. Amsterdam, May HThe Germans are removing airships from Maubeuge to Charleroi. GERMAN AIRMEN DROP BOMBS. (Received 9.20 a.m.) Paris, May 12. German aviators dropped bombs harmlessly at Compeigne and Audry.
