—«a» PLOT THAT FAILED. STRIFE-MAKERS IN INDIA. RETURNED AMERICAN-INOIANS CAUSE TROUBLE. THE PEOPLE LOYAL TO BRITAIN. (Received 10.35 a.m.) Delhi, May 10. An important prosecution under the recent “Defence of India Act” i.s progressing at Lahore against eighty-two persons who are alleged to have indulged in a seditious conspiracy agsdnst the British Government, engineered hy Indians returning from America. The origin of the conspiracy it was found, was a movement on the Pacific Coast, directed hy one Sab Dyal. In the hope that the administration would he weakened hy the wai emissaries returned to India in considerable numbers, and were endeavouring to str up trouble, mainly m the Punjab and United Provinces, ft was sought to collect arms and explosives. to circulate seditious literature, to tamper with the troops and to obtain funds by robbery. A series of Dacoit murders having taken place, 1 owing to the vigilance of the police with co-operation from the people, seizures of bombs were made and the conspirators’ plans detected. ihe ringleaders were arrested. Several of those implicated made full confessions of a plot which had failed in the very beginning. The plotters first failed to win the sympathy of their own people in India. Though the majority of the plotters were Sikhs, the Government had every assistance from the Sikhs leaders, who keenly resented the discreditable proceedings of their fellows. Attempts were made to persuade Mahommedans to join in a revolt, but they failed, and there are very few Mahommedans among the accused-
