(Received -10.10 a.m.) London, May 9. “Eye-witness” states tliat after severe fighting on the afternoon of May 2nd, our line north of Ypres i was re-established in the evening. , The indications on Monday morning were of a renewal of the attack, and guns were fired into considerable bodies of the enemy, inflicting heavy losses. The fighting ' was renewed on Wednesday at several points round the Ypres sailient. Clouds of gas forced us to evacuate the trenches on Hill 60, whereupon the Germans rushed the hill, though they were temporarily checked by our artillery. The Ger- : mans, getting theadvantage of the confused fighting, followed up thensuccess. and forced their way to our supporting lino in the direction ‘ of Zillebeke. They took some trenches north of the hill, but a British coun-ter-attapk drove them off the captured trenches, except on the crest and north-east of the hill. (Received 12.30 p.m). “Eye-witness” states further:— The British made another counterattack at midnight and regained the whole position north-east of the* Hill, but again were driven off by gases.
