NEW SCALE OF FREICHT dHARCESi Pkb Pkebs Association. Wellington, May 8. On and after lotlr May, the new rates of freight on Xew Zealand produce will he in operation on all direct lines.. The new rates show a substantial advance on the previous rates, hut are still below those ruling in Australia for similar cargo. OUR SUPPLY OF BUTTER, Wellington, May 7. The Premier, Mr Massey. stated this morning that the Dairy Commissioner was of opinion there was sufficient butter in the Dominion for requirements, and more could lie shipped to Vancouver and England this season. The Department is ascertaining exactly what has been .done by way of export, and any attempt to increase the price would be followed by the absolute prohibition, of export. MUNITION, WORKERS OFFER THEIR SERVICES. Wellington. May 8. The Defence Department has received a large number of applications from artisans and merchants willing to go to England to assist in the production of munitions of war, but so far the Government has not received any reply to its communications regarding such offers. A number-of the applicants arc men engaged ill the Colonial Ammunition Factory at Auckland, but the Government is not prepared to allow them to go as their services are urgently required here.
