HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT. United Peek* abbooution. London, May 1. The High Commissioner’s cable. Mutton.—-The market is firm with an upward tendency, and a good demand continues. Canterbury 6,<d, North Island,6 J-16d, Higher prices have been obtained in each case for i best quality light weight ewes at 5 9,-IGd. Laiph,—The market is weaker, with a tendency downward owing to the • high, price together with increasing -supplies. Canterbury twos 7£d, i other weights Bd, second grade light ,7-Sd., .. ~ , , Beef,—-The market is very firm, the' 4snppl\es of American chilled being small. New Zealand hauls 6gd, fores GRt,, chilled hinds Bd, fores 6|d. | . Butter.—The market is firmer with good demand on account of the quantity of colonial, to lie shipped from Australia and New Zealand and butter being paekikl in tins for the Govern- ■ rment, also the absence of Siberian..; The. supply is. running short here, and merchants are experiencing inconven- 1 iei.it delay , in. delivery on the arrival of the butter at London docks. ' Danish is firm at 144 s to 1465, New Zea-j land firm 134 s to 1365., unsalted 138 s to 1425, Australian 130 s to 1325, exceptionally 1345, Siberian 128 s tq 130 s, exceptionally 1325, Irish creamery J 3Gs Argentine 128 s to 130 s.
Cheese,—The market is firm. Canadian white 96s to -98 s, colored 94s to 965. New Zealand is firm with white colored. 93s to 94s Australian 88s to
90s. United States is in good demand, colored 83s to 90s, white 87s to 925. Hemp.—The market is firmer, but
the demand is chiefly for immediate delivery. Manila freights have been raised 30s per ton of 2240 lbs. Faircurrent Manila £39, New Zealand goodfair grade £32 10s, fair £3O 10s; forward shipment good-fair £3l 10s, fair £3O. Manila forward shipment cannot be quoted owing to the great uncertainty concerning the iicav grading regulation. The output from Manila for the week was 26,000 bales.
Hops.—The market continues dull, and wo change is expected until definite Government regulations 'concerning the liquor traffic can be settled. English 75s to 100 s, Californian 70s to 955.
Wheat.—There has been considerable fluctuation during the week, but the market is now somewhat steadier. Canadian op passage, 665,, May ,tq June 645, American new crop July and August 545, Argentine on passage : 625. Oats.—The market is very quiet. •Argentine 31s. NEWTON KING’S REPORT. At Waiwakaiho yards on Friday, 23rd, I had a good entry, of which there was a fair clearance. Weaner steers were selling readily, and Shorthorn weaner heifers showed an improvement. Store cows eased again iii sympathy , with, outside sales, but vendors were selling. Prices obtained were:—Weaner steers from £1 8s to £2 ss, weaner heifers 18s to £1 4s 6d, mixed weaners 18s 6d to £1 7s 6d, 15 and 18 month stocks £3 9s to £3 14s, 2i year steers (well done) £6 10s, springing heifers £6 15s to £7 9s Od, 4 d,airy cows £6 2,s 6d to £9 os, fat cow £6 6s to £.B, 2s forward cows £4 4s to £5 3s 6d, store cows £2 6s to £3 12s 6d ; smpll bulls £3 17s 6d, mixed fat sheep £1 Is id, lambs (good) 13s, small 8s lOd, f.rn. ewes 10s 9d.
At Douglas on ‘26th, inst., there was a-line yarding of both sheep and tattle, two or three lines of cattle being shut out. On Tuesday, 27th inst., at Stratford, I despite the heavy rain, 1 had a full 1 yarding of cattle and sheep, with a very representative attendance. The warm rain evidently made a movement on the day, as very fair bidding was obtained throughout for all classes, a very satisfactory sale resulting. There were no good weaner steers offering, but a good number of weaner heifers were sold at the hammer at an advance on recent sales. We had good entries in all lines, and a good attendance of the public, practically everything offered was sold at prices satisfactory to the vendors. We quote: Pigs, weaners, 13s, 14s, stores 31s 6d. Poultry, hens Is, l.s 3d, Is 6d, Is Bd, chicks Is 3d, Is Gd, ducks Is 6d, Is 10d.
