THE HURRICANE AT NIUE.

The Ketch Kercru, which arrived' from Nine last night, brings the first• news of the effects of the -lamiai'Vi hurricane upon that island. Ihe gale blow down several thousand eo-j coanut trees, and destroyed most ot the bananas and breadfruit. The mission church at Mutalau had its roof blown off, and some hundreds of' native huts were destroyed or damaged. Two other churches suffered injury, but the Government buildings escaped. Subsequently, however, trees flowered freely and there were indications of. a general recovery when the Kerern left. On her way) down the ketch encountered some ( particularly bad weather, and when about 150 miles from Sunday Island she was slopping a lot of water over her bows. About seven tons of; copra, stowed on the decks, weroj washed overboard, but.no other dam-j age was done. Notwithstanding, the Kercru made the round trip in thirty days, one day better than her previous record.
