MISSION STEAMER STRUCK BY LIGHTNING.
The mission steamer John Williams returned to Sydney from the Islands, in charge of Captain Kettle. She brought several missionaries and 12 na.tive teachers. The cruise was marked by some heavy weather, and the John Williams |iad a trying time. On the run to Darn, when off Bramble Bay, she was overtaken by a terrific thunderstorm, j during which the maintruck was completely shattered by lightning. The shock caused some excitement on board. Part of the gear was carried away, and a heavy lamp fell on deck. Fortunately, no one was injured. The John Williams was hard pressed in a hurricane, and later on "in the voyage encountered a cyclone disturbance, and she had to run for shelter on two oc-i fusions. Captain Kettle reports that during the progress of one of the storms hot took observations off Sn-an Island, in l Fife Bay, about 40 miles from Satnarai. The sunken reef there was breaking badly, thus indicating the confus-j ed state of the sea. The John Williams made a smart run of eight ami a half days from Dam. v J
