NEW ZEALAND OFFICER KILLED Peb Press Association. Auckland, April 29. Xews has been received in Auckland of tlie death of Captain H. J. J. Walker, son of Mr and Mrs Henry C. H. Walker, of Remuera. The text of the telegram from the Secretary of State for War is as follows: “1 deeply regret that Captain )\ alker, 1-st Royal Warwickshire Regiment, was killed in action on April 25. Lord Kitclionei expresses sympathy.” Advice was received on January 22nd that Lieutenant Walker had been promoted to the rank- of captain. His name was mentioner in despatches the following month for “gallantry and distinguished service in the field.” Captain Walker was 25 years of age. GREAT EFFORT FOR THE BELGIANS. Ashburton, April 29. Tiie Ashburton County Belgian fete, organised in aid of the relief fund, attracted about 10,000 people. Cattle, horses, etc., which had been donated to the fund, were auctioned and realised over £2OOO. Great interest centred in the Queen of the Carnival competition, which resulted as follows: — Miss M. Harrison (Rakaia district candidate), 1(53,229 votes; Miss D. Wilson (Methven district), 150.32-1; .Miss D. Keith (sports clubs), 101,209; Miss H. Baird (auctioneers), 89,600; Miss M. Farrell (Hinds and Mayfield districts), 83,531; Miss E. Fletcher (retailers of Ashburton), 45,607. The total votes were 633,560, representing over £7900, of which votes representing £2700 odd were put in during the last few minutes prior to the closing of the poll. It is confidently anticipated that the total nett proceeds will reach £14,000. CANADA’S THANKS. Wellington, April 29. ’ The following reply lias been received by the Prime Minister from the Prime Minister of Canada : “On behalf of the Government'and people of Canada I desire to express the deepest appreciation for the messages. Canada is thrilled with mingled pride and sorrow, pride in the valorous deeds of her gallant sons, and sorrow for those who have fallen in the fight for liberty and democracy. We earnestly reciprocate your wish that Canadians may yet fight side by side with their New Zealand brothers for the integrity of the Empire, and for preservation of its institutions and liberties.
