The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER FRIDAY, APRIL 30, 1915. A NATIONAL HIGHWAY.
The Taumaruuui Chamber of Commerce has originated a scheme fo>‘ the construction of a g ,- eut central high- i way from Wellington to Auckland. The idea is to carry through a Main Trunk wheel road over a distance of j about four hundred and fifty miles, passing through Taihape, Waiouru, Taumarunni and Te Kuiti, and thence to Auckland along the present neglected Great South Road. Existing roads are, it is suggested, to be util- ( ised-'as much as .possible, and linked! up with each other by bridging num-j erous rivers, particularly the streams j which flow southward and westward from Mount Ruapehu, and by building; a road, roughly parallel with the Main j Trunk Railway, between the head wat-; ors of the Wanganui River and the King Country metropolis, Te Kuiti. I It is urged that such a road would lead to a very great development of the motor traffic, both for business and pleasure, through a highly picturesque tract of forest ami mountain country, and would stimulate trade between, the towns in the interior of the North Island. The Auckland City Council is examining the project with a favorable eye, and Wellington is expected to take action also. The building of this great highway, ii within the range of practical politics, must be a national undertaking and it is therefore highly probable that the scheme will come before Parliament during the coming session.
