ALLEGED BETTING.

Dunedin, April 20. In the Police Court to-day, before Mr Widlowson, S.M., Frederick Mat. thews was charged with being a bookmaker in that ho did bet on licensed premises. The evidence for the police was that on March 2oth, file second day of the Southland races, defendant and a man named Daniel McLaren, who was described as a bookmaker, were in the Grand Hotel. Defendant said to McLaren, “Ten shillings on—” .The police did not catch the name of the horse, hut saw .McLaren writing If ns so in a book. The police contended that Matthews was the principal in the matter, and was therefore liable as a bookmaker. Mr.'Hanjon, For defendant, suggested an adjournment in order to look into the point raised, as the view expressed by the police was new to him. He contended defendant was not a bookmaker. The case was adjourned sine die to enable the question to be investigated.
