DENBIGH ROAD.
[from our own correspondent.! A concert and dance, in aid of the Belgians, took place in the Denbigh Road schoolroom on Thursday night last, the 22nd inst., and in spite of the unfavorable appearance of the weather throughout the early part of the evening, the building was well filled by an appreciative audience. A varied and extensive programme had been prepared and the rendering ol the various items left nothing to bo desired. Apologies were received from Mrs Massey, who was unable to attend m account of ill health, and from Mr R, Masters, on account of temporary absence from the district. 'lhe first item, an overture, was rendered by (Miss L. Kivell. Master F. Barry contributed two songs in good style. The genial Captain Allen was also present, and contributed four recitations, including Kipling’s “Absent-Minded Beggar,” for which he received a well merited encore, afterwards taking a collection of a little over a guinea in his tambourine. Miss E. Knox, Mi Knox, Miss Pedersen, Miss Sullivan, and Mr G. Smith, each contributed a song. The comic element was introduced by Miss Muse and Mr Bradley, both of whom received an encore. A very clever exhibition of club swinging was given by -Miss L. Kivell, while Mr Wade’s step-dancing was greatly appreciated. Mr Dunlop’s singing was :iuite a feature of the evening, and his four songs were rendered in splendid style. A vote of thanks, moved by the chairman, and the singing of the National Anthem, brought to a close lone of the most successful concerts we have had for some time. Miss Andersen very ably filled the position 01 pianist throughout the evening, and also- for the dance which followed. Refreshments were provided by the local ladies. The dance, which was well patronised, was kept up until about 4 a.m. The proceeds will amount to (about £lO, after deducting all expenses. i
