LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Burgesses are reminded of the meeting in the Town Hall at eight o’clock this evening, when Mr R. McK. Morison, a candidate for the Stratford Mayoralty, will deliver an address on Municipal matters. A circular received by the local defence authorities, orders senior cadets in 94, 95, and 104 companies to return their anus to the defence office, Stratford, at once for the purpose of checking and classifying. Sergeant Dale, ,of the local police, forwards the information that he has been in communication with tlie relatives of the man Peajce, and that a brother of deceased will arrive by the mail train to-morrow evening, when the inquest will be proceeded with so that the body may lie returned to Wellington on Thursday by the mail train. What good roads mean to the settler was exemplified at a meeting of Stratford County Councillors on Saturday, Cr Anderson stated that on tho tarred road in the Eltham County near his farm, two horses could pull out with close on two tons of stuff, but previous to the era jof improvement it took two horses all they know to pull a ton. There was not only the upkeep of horses to be considered, but an extra man for a whole day. The same thihg applied to the dairy companies. On the old road they could not use motor lorries, and the cost of cartage was ISs per ton, whereas now with good roads and lorries it was only from 6s to 7s per ton.
