At the meeting of the committee of the Stratford County Council, set up to discuss matters in connection with the proposed toll gate on the Mountain Road, the following resolution, moved by Cr. Christoffel, and seconded by Cr. Anderson,' was carried: That the Minister for Public Works be informed that as the road on which the teoll gate is proposed to be erected is practically carrying the whole of the through traffic between NeW Plymouth, Napier, Wellington, Wanganui, and Palmerston North districts, the Council consider it would be of no use to expect any contributions from the neighbouring local bodies, and dobs blot see the necessity for a special commission, but is prepared to Redder evidence in' support of the Council's request for a toll gate.
By the last mail from England Mr .7. A. Lambert, of Kaitima, received from Mr S. B. Bollings, of Bradford, a parcel of vicuna wool of the best quality for inclusion in his cabinet of specimens (says the Marlborough Express). Mr Boilings mentioned that this wool was, at the date of writing (February 18):, worth /.lOs per lb., and at the previous sales fetched 12s 6d. The exhibit is an especially interesting one, for probably but very few people in this part of the world have seen vicuna wool. The vicuna is a South American mammal native to the elevated plains of the Andes, allied to the llama, but smaller. It has a thick coat of very fine- reddish-brown wool, and long, pendant white hair on the breast and belly. The wool, being of the most delicate fibre, is used for the manufacture of high-class fabrics, and but ,a small proportion enters into the cloth of the well-known suitings. The supply is limited, and, as is indicated by the price, the wool meets with an eager demand.
