CAMPAIGN'S RESULT TO DATE. TiMia and Sydney Sun Service. ,:- Loudon; April 22. A correspondent feOTjring eastern France writes: "The net results of the autumn and winter campaigns is that.the Germans have lost their ini- , tial advantage of attack. Instead of acting on offensive lines they are being besieged by the Allies. Frontal ,atr, tacks on St. Mihiel would have meant a huge loss of ilfe, because the Germans had installed a number of Austrian big guns, commanding a radius of.t'eu'hiiles. Consequently the Allies chose the alternative of .squeezing put the enemy from each side of the angle between F.resnes, St. laihiel, ' and Pont-anMousson simultaneously, gradually approaching the tAvo vital positions .within the angle BignullesTroue de Spada. "It was rumoured on Saturday that the Germans had altogether evacuated St. Mihiel, but until they had abandoned Camp des Komaius it will be impossible for the French to occupy the town, which is dominated by forts. It seems to be certain, that the Ger'mans have begun to withdraw the heavy guns at Camp des Romains further north. "The French gained ground along both r,oads which run between Verdun and Met/.. Prospects at Verdun and at the Moselle have taken a decided turn in favor of the Allies.".., £i „iW
