GENERAL.
Arrivals in New Zealand from oversea during tin; month of March totalled 2210, compared with 3161 in March of last year. Departures numbered 2373, as against 1855 a year ago. An Austrian tried to get out of Australia the other day by stowing away on the American liner Ventura. As usual, military police and detectives made a search ol' the vessel. This was apparently unsuccessful, but shortly before the boat sailed one of the seamen whispered something to a soldier, A further search was made, and a, man was found hiding in a cunninglyconstructed tunnel under a number of bags of coal. At the revolver's point he was ordered out. lie did so, protesting that he was a Swiss. Upon examination, however, certain things came to light, and the man, who proved to be an Austrian. i s at present under arrest at Victoria Barracks. A peciilar feature of the stowing away is that the prisoner had been free to go and come as he pleased. He was not interned in the concentration camp, nor was he under orders to report himself periodically.
