GENERAL.
A correspondent of the “Church Family Newspaper” points out some curious alphabetical coincidences in connection with the war. Our first .naval loss was H.M.ft. Amphion. It wa.s lifniiin who defended Liege when Merlin affronted Brussels by violating Belgium. It was Beatty who boat the Germans in the Bight and sank the would-bo baby-killers in the Blucher. It was Sturdoe who sank Spee in the Scharnhorst. It was Botha with Boers who beat Beyers. It is also noticeable bow the letter “K” lias figured in the life of Lord Kitchener. His past associates him with Khartoum, the Khedive, the Kalipba, and Kabul—his present with the Kaiser. A remarkable story of a missing bridegroom came to light at Clitheroo. A wedding had been arranged to take place at Mount Zion Primitive Methodist Chapel, and the minister, registrar, bride, and a number of guests had gathered. The bridegroom, however, did not appear at the time fixed. As he was still absent after a lengthy interval, several of the guests departed in search of him. Their efforts, however, were futile, and the bridal party had to return home. The guests, however, pnrtok of the feast provided to celebrate the event which did not come off. It was afterwards ascertained that the prospective bridegroom had gone to Blackburn to witness a football match.
