The Turkish account of the sinking of the Els states that the vessel left Tenedos at midnight and dived after entering the Straits to avoid searchlights. She grounded at 6.30, but; the conning tower was showing. The first shell of the Turkish batteries struck the tower, killing the captain. The second wrecked the machinery. The crew left the vessel after three had been killed and seven wounded. The enemy’s aeroplanes bombed the vessel to prevent it falling into ‘’Turkish hands. The Turks rescued the crew.'
