STRATFORD SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

At the monthly meeting ■of the Stratford School Committee last evening. there were present: Messrs I*. Skoglund (chairman), W. McDonald, I • AV. McMillan. E. Jackson, E. AV. Hancock, T. Lawson, G. Smart, H. Sanderson, and F. Cramer. PROPOSED HIGH SCHOOL. The Chairman reported that the Domain Board had arranged for a committee to confer with the School Committee in connection with the site for the High School. Air Tyrer had made the suggestion that this matter should be discussed at the meeting of householders, and also expressing the opinion that the school should be near the railway station. One feature of the proposed site is that there is a public domain right alongside. Mr Penn pointed out that the Domain Board did not want to lose revenue over the matter.

51 r Smart: The school is going to improve the domain. On the motion of Mr McMillan, seconded by Mr McDonald, it was decided that the committee endeavour to gain the co-operation of the Domain Board in obtaining the freehold of the reserve between Hamlet and Portia Streets, it being the unanimous opinion of the committee that this is the best site offering in the town. The committee appointed to confer with the Domain Board on the site consists of Messrs McMillan, Smart, Skoglund and McDonald. A GOOD JOB. Discussing matters in the balancesheet, Mr Jackson said that the work done on the girl’s playground would cost about £l3, hut it would’ be a good job. Mr Hancock said that the amount for fuel (£24) seemed rather largo. The balance-sheet was received. HEADMASTER’S REPORT. The Headmaster (Mr F. Tyror) reported as follows: For the quarter ended 81st March the average attendance was 539 Primary School, 153 High School—i.e., 697 in all. The highest attendance recorded during the quarter was 721. The quarter ended with 75G names on th£ rolls. The report of Mr Gill, Inspector of High Schools, is before you. Mr Gill spent three days in the school, and went thoroughly into all our secondary work. Training classes for teachers opened in the Technical School on the. 10th inst., and will he held on Saturdays throughout the winter months. Evening classes in English, Latin and Mathematics are now current, and a class in dressmaking is to be opened on the afternoon of Thursday next, the 22nd inst., at 3.30 p.m. 1 should like your committee to arrange for a supply of firewood for the winter months. FINANCE. Accounts totalling £lO were passed for payment.
