Hawkins’ many friends in Sratford will learn with regret that he has been advised of the serious illness of his eldest son who left for the front with tiie first New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Young Hawkins is suffering with pneumonia. i Captain E. A. Belcher, formerly headmaster of Christ’s College, Christchurch, who was appointed to the 9th (Service) Battalion, Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, in January, has been promoted to the rank of major. The battalion is at present at Falmouth, and forms part of the 103rd brigade. Mr and Mrs Jack Olliver were welcomed home to Stratfoid last evening by a few friends. Mr Fred Dunlop was chairman of the gathering, and apologised for the absence of several gentlemen. A short toast list was honored, the health of Mr and Mrs Olliver, junr., and Mr and Mrs Olliver, senr., being heartily drunk. Musical items added to the pleasure of the evening, which concluded with the singing of Auld Lang Syne.
