PEACE AND THE VATICAN. United Pusan Absociation. Rome, April 15.

The newspaper Corriere Della Sera states that the Vatican |s overwhelmed with telegraphic inquiries and protests from Roman Catholic clergy and laity in the United States, Britain and France. Probably the Pope will disavow the interview in the forthcoming issue of the Osservatore Romano. The paper says the interview was written by Karl von Wiegaud, a German American, who previously supplied the New York World with interviews.

The Corriere Delhi Sera doubts whether the interview occurred. The Vatican organs in reproducing the interview omitted the phrase urging Presdent Wilson to do nothing to prolong the war, which has been interpreted to mean to stop exporting munitions to the Allies.

A RUSE OF THE SPY. Rome, April 15. Many Austro-German men dressed as “ladies” are infesting northern Italy. There are many rumors of mysterious burials of explosives, sometimes be neath the floors of German-owned warehouses. The police have sealed a number, of such places. A “lady was observed to be digging a trench inside a railway tunnel, and was allowed to continue until she had deposited a considerable quantity of explosives. Then she was arrested. PEACE AND THE VATICAN. TRUTH CONCERNING FAMOUS INTERVIEW. (Received 12.25 p.m.) Home, April 15. The “Corriere de Italia” and the “Corresponden/.a” deny that Karl von Wiegand interviewed the Pope. He merely had an audience similar to other people when the Pope referred to the peace question, which Wiegand interpreted in his own way.
