The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER. THURSDAY, APRIL 15, 1915. HELP FOR SERVIA.
The Lyttelton Times remarks that the Serbs and Montenegrins have had little share so far in the huge sums of money and the shiploads of gifts raised for the relief of sufferers by the great war. The Serbs' share of trouble, however, has been little less than Belgium's in tale of families deprived of breadwinners and in all the misery that follows in the wake of a war waged against a .powerful enemy, and the world is beginning to realise that it would do well to spare something from its pocket for the nation that has opposed such an indomitable front to Austria. In New Zealand a start has been made in this direction, for as a telegram from Masterton records the Wairarapa Relief Funds executive has voted £IOOO to the relief of the Serbians and Montenegrins, which is to ho followed by .€SOO per month. This is in addition to large sums devoted to the succour of the Belgians, both on the Continent and in London. Wairarapa's thoughtful lead will, no doubt, stimulate other parts of the Dominion to similar action. While Belgium's need is urgent and continuous, the little lands that are doing their manful part in the cause of liberty in a sphere less profusely described and pictured may fairly claim a mite from the fortunate countries untouched by the war-hammer of Tlior.
