THE BRfNK PROBLEM. United Pbjbsb AssociationLondon, April 14. The Daily Chronicje says the Cabinet's drink policy is still unsettled. Two committees inquiring into the matter have asked the opinions of experts like Thomas Whittaker, Seehohm Rowntree, Labor leaders, and also leading business men. It is certain that the Government does not contemplate universal prohibition, but there will probably be restrictive measures, including prohibition of the manufacture and sale of spirits; reduction of ihe alcoholic strength of beer; hours of sale not to exceed five; closing of public-houses near factories, mines and workshops, and compensation of interests affected. The Cnronicle affirms tMe statment that Cabinet is considering an elaborate memorandum with a view of eliminating private profits from the sale of alcoholic liquors, the State acquiring breweriesand licensed houses at a cost of three! hundred millions.
THE WHEAT MARKET. (Received 2.25 p.m.) London, April 14. It is officially announced that the Government will not buy more wheat, believing it can rely on the corn trade, to supply the country's requirements for the remainder-of the .cereal year. INSULATED SHIPPING BPACE REQUISITIONED BY AUTHORITIES. London, April 15. The Gazette notifies that the Government has requisitioned the whole of the insulated space in British steamships trading between Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.
