A WHITE AUSTRALIA.
OPINION OF JAPANESE TRADE COMMISSIONER. Per Press Association. Wellington, April 10. Discussing questions of invasion in the Pacific by the Japanese in relation to. the “White Australia” policy, Dr. Miura, Japanese trade commissioner, yesterday said: “I shall be perfectly candid. Just as the tiger cannot change its spots, we cannot alter our colour; but I think you have already found our hearts are in the right place. What the future has in store we do not know, hut so far as this delicate question is concerned, we are in hopes that after this terrible war is oyer, the overseas Dominions of Great Rritaiu will think more kindly of ns than they have done in the past. It may bp that the Australian opinion on the “white” question will change, hut so far as we are concerned, our inquiries in Australia have Jed ns to understand that the attitude taken up is “constitutional.” We regard that attitude as unreasonable and unfair, but nevertheless we do not bear ill will in consequence. We are offering “the right hand of fellowship” in trading relations and we are in hopes that the present commission will bear good fruit. There should he great benefit on both sides, and so far as we are concerned we only want what your Prime Minister describes as a ‘square deal.’ ”
