LOCAL AND GENERAL.
An interesting test of the relative speed of a foot runner, racing pony, cyclist, and motor-cyclist, over a 220 yds. course, was one of the most attractive events at the Victoria Automobile Club's Patriotic Gymkhana, held in Melbourne recently. The respective handicaps were:—J. A. Troup (pedestrian), 110yds.; Addie's Dream (a pony), 30yds.; A. V. Brown (cyclist) 74yds.; and E. Tylor (motor-cyclist), scratch. The pedestrian won easily with some yards to spare, in II 2-os, the cyclist and pony dead-heated for second place, with the moto'r-cyclist a long way back. The locally-bred Airana put up a record in his win in the Stewards' Trot Handicap in harness at Alexanddra Park, Auckland, on Wednesday, when he cut-out the mile and a-h'alf in 3.25. Trainer .lack Butler had the bay gelding at the top of his form, and rode him with splendid judgment. The' Auckland Herald's report says that Floran/, headed Grattan Abbey in the hisst three furlongs, but at the turn for home Airana was close to the leading pair, and an exciting finish home ended in Airana winning by three-quarters of a length from Grattan Abbey, who defeated Florauz iiii the last few strides for second money. Supporters of Airana secured a bountiful .return I'rom the tote, and it is gratifying to hear that the popular owner, Mr J. Fit/.gerald landed some hundreds as the result of the race.
