Victor Trumper, the famous Australian cricketer, is seriously ill. The death of Air George Sangster, a, prominent Victorian Laborite, is announced. Private advice received in Wellington states that Captain Hardham. V.C., who is a member of New Zealand's main expeditionary force, has been promoted to the rank of Major. Mr Khvood Mead, chairman of the Victorian State Rivers Water-supply Commission, has resigned, having accepted the post of chairman of the United States Irrigation Reclamation Commission, states a Melbourne cablegram. Mrs Kimmener. of Stafford, died in the Hokitika hospital on Tuesday as the result of burns caused through falling into the fireplace a week before. The Press Association states that her age was 75 years. As the result of a horse breaking through the road on Ross Road yesterday afternoon (.states a P.A. message from Hokitika). Rev. Monaghan and his mother were thrown out of a trap. Rev. Monaghan escaped with severe bruises, but his mother had her right arm broken, and sustained concussion of the brain. The injuries are severe, though not dangerous.

Miss Daisy Chapman, of Whakatane, has received word (says the YVhakatane Press) that she has the honor of being awarded the first scholarship (music) given by the trustees of the Johanna Lohise bequest, Christchurch, entitling her to £.IOO per annum in New Zealand of £'l-50 abroad for three years. Miss Chapman will be leaving next month to commence her musical studies in connection with the scholarship.

Changes in the personnel of the staff of the Hauera railway station are about to take place. Mr O. Osborne, booking clerk, is to go to Halcomhe, on promotion as stationmaster. .Mr .Jarman (parcels) transfers to the goods department, Wanganui. The Rev. Dean McKenna, V. 0., of Masterton, has received.:! letter from Archbishop Redwood, of Wellington, who at the time of writing (February 2~Ah) was at Rome, stating that the Pope bad conferred the title of Monsignor on him and the Rev. Walsh, of Westport. Archbishop Redwood is by now in Xew York, and expects to leave on the return to Xew Zealand in June next, coming via San Francisco.

A quiet but pretty wedding took place at the residence of Mr J. Marra, Pembroke Road, on Wednesdays the contracting parties being Mr Ernest H. Allen, of Mangatoki and Miss Mary Elizabeth Schaffer, of Patea. The bride looked extremely nice in a stylish navy blue costume trimmed with white, with felt hat to match, trimmed with white plumes. She was attended by little Ruth Marra as bridesmaid. During the afternoon, Mr and Mix Allen left mid showers of rice for the south, where the honeymoon is to lie spent.
