The new State abattoirs at Homebush have been opened. The first sheep slaughtered was presented to the Premier, offered it for sale in aid of the Belgian Fund. It was sold and resold for a total of £6OO. At the Sydney show horse sales Mitchell and O'Brien's draught mares ranged from 57 to 102 guineas. The Department of Agriculture was amongst the purchasers. The show has closed. Both attendance and receipts showed a big reduction on last year's, the result largely of the rain.
Butter merchants have obtained sanction to add 2s per cwt. to the recent prices fixed for butter, to cover boxes and cartage. Retailers are greatly dissatisfied with the small margin of profit. Official industrial returns show that 24,770 workers have left their various trades and callings to take up military employment, including the people engaged in clerical and professional work who enlisted. The State's unemployed are estimated at 500.
