The French east of Verdun captured hills 2)9 and 221. near Etain.
MISCELLANEOUS. Paris, April 7. Official: A military organ states a new explosive shell has increased the power o fthe .75 gun tenfold. Three hundred and forty (Jreek volunteers have arrived ate .Marseilles, to enlist in the Foreign Legion. A Taube dropped bombs on a church near Ypres, and twelve women and the preacher were killed. Official: The advance at Eparges was made possible owing to the wonderful artillery lire since February. The Germans dug caverns of considerable depth. At the time of the attack they were at the bottom of the excavations. The concussion of the projectiles extinguished the lamps, and the men were plunged into darkness, and made prisoners while the soldiers in the trenches were blotted out by artillery. Official: We made appreciable progress eastwards of Verdun, and occupied the village of Gussainille and summits commanding the valley of Arne. »

The higher command has been rejuvenated by generals ten years younger than their predecessors, General J off re believing in new blcod and insisting on a higher standard of activity. The "Tommies" were amazed to see French officers and non-commissioned officers sitting at the same table, a captain and a corporal bending over chessboards in the trenches, a strange blend of camaraderie and sternness. But the moment there is duty ahead the iron shutter falls, and unrelenting discipline is enforced.
