GERMAN RAIDERS DRIVEN OVER THE FRONTIER. United Phess Association. Livingstone (South Africa), April o. A combined Belgian and British patrol attacked German raiders north of Abercorn and drove them back across the frontier. Several were killed. THE OCCUPATION OF AUS. United Pbess Association. ,/ Capetown April 5.
The enemy's defences at Aus were elaborate. The trendies were deep and well designed, and there was a fine telephonic system involving thirty miles of wire. There were gun emplacements and sunken mines and entanglements. The Union troops had a stiff task in covering fifteen miles of sandy desert from Garub to Aus. The wells were poisoned with carbolic solution. The enemy posted a notice on the well, indicating that the water was undrinkable. The enemy depleted stories and burned much material. The troops had a miraculous escape. Gun wheels passed within a few inches of mines. The bodies of several Hottentots were found hanged.
