THE EASTER RACING.
(Notes by Cicero.)
The Auckland Racing Club received splendid acceptances for their autumn meeting, and some fine racing should be witnessed at this popular gathering by those privileged to bo at Ellerslio. A dozen figure in the opening event, the Tradesmen’s Handicap, of 1J miles, for which event Red Book and Phosphorus should bo well supported. Of the thirteen acceptors for the Hurdles, Spalperion, Tragedy King, and Admiral Soult will possibly bo backed in the order named. No less than twenty-two have accepted for the President’s Handicap,
five furlongs. As a lot depends on the draw lor positions at the post it is difficult to forecast the favorite. Toreador, Grattan, and Simple Sam may he prominent. The next event on the oard looks a gift for Desert Gold, but Arran will bo his most dangerous opponent. The next race on tiie programme is the chief event, the Easter Hardin ip, of one mile, for which eighteen horses made the fina: payment. To have a chance in this race it looks as though a horse must be capable of running eight furlongs fn 1.40 or better. One can pick half a dozen candidates likely to run somewhere pretty close to this time, but the difficulty is in selecting the one just a bit better on the day. Downham, King Lupin and Aster, should provide a capital contest. A large number accepted for the Nelson Handicap, including Calais, who is very well at present. The class of youngster engaged in the Onslow Stakes is rather inferior, and Hyginas, who hails from Karamn stable, may prove the toughest proposition.
With the Eden Handicap, of seven furlongs, the first day’s racing will close. The scratching pen will be freely used in the big field for this event, but Colonel Soult and Soultane may be hacked by their respective parties.
