SUCCESSFUL PICNIC AND DANCe|
Rewarded at last by sunny weather, the Midhirst settlors’ picnic and sports took place yesterday on the factory grounds, when there was a fair attendance. Starting about noon, varied programme of sports was gone through, the following gentlemen officiating;—Starters, Messrs W. Hamblyn and J. Plews; handicappers, Messrs J. M. Shotter, F. Carter, and A. Walsh; course stewards, Messrs 11. Shotter, (1. Caspar, W. Taylor, and FSchumacher ; judges, Messrs C. Keightley and 0. Ferguson. The results were 'as follows :
100 Yards open Handicap.—C. Fowler 1. H. Wright 2.
100yds Ladies’ Race.— X. Johnstone ], M. Johnstone 2.
220yds Boys’ Race, under If years. Kerrisk 1, Myers 2, Hodgson 3. 7.syds Sack Race.—Two competitors I raced well to within a few yards of the tape, when both fell, but H. Wright was easily the winner.
220yds Open Handicap.—There was some good running, N. Tempero being first, closely followed by W. Symes. 100yds. Married Men’s Race.—H. Fever 1.
880yds. Boys’ Race, under 17 years. —B. Wilson (Stratford), won easily. Married Ladies’ Race.—Mrs Jacobsen 1, Mrs Petersen 2.
Hop, Steep and Jump.—J. H. r J aylor, scratch. 37ft lOin, 1 ; A. Vickers, 37ft 9iin.. 2. Half Mile Open Handicap.—A. Vickers 1. T. E. Taylor 2. Threading the Needle Race, 100yds each way.— C. E. Fowler 1, Miers 2. Stepping the Chain.—B. J. Petersen 1, R. Guppy 2. A supplementary “step” resulted in R. Guppy being first. 100yds. Girls’ Race, under 14 years. —P. Symons 1, E. Tempero 2, H. Carroll 3.
Suppliers’ Race (8 entries).—A. Boniface 1, A. Vickers 2. 440yds. Open Handicap.—T. E. Taylor 1, A. Vickers 2.
Girls’ Race, over lE—E. Tempero 1. E. Fowler' 2. V. Abbott 3. Men’s Race (over 45 years).—P. J. Petersen 1. R. Carroll 2. Nail Driving for Ladies.—Mrs A. Wright 1. The committee are satisfied as to the financial result, and desire to acknowledge the help rendered by many friends. Altogether a pleasant time was spent, there being' visitors from Stratford, Toko, Cardiff. Tariki, and the surrounding district. Mrs M. M. Brooking (Stratford), had charge of the refreshment and lolly stall, which were well patronised. The result of sheep and pig-guessing competitions will be announced later. In the evening a dance was held m the Town Hall, when there was an excellent atetendance. Messrs J.'M. Shutter and F. Carter acting as M.C’s. Music was supplied by Miss Anderson (piano), and Mr S. Parker (cornet), and the floor was in first-class condition. It was unfortunate that the sports had to be twice postponed, but the committee did their best under the circumstances, and it is anticipated as the result of the day’s efforts a satisfactory sum will be handed over to the Patroitic Fund.
