Mr Malcolm Ross has been appointed official correspondent lor the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces, states a Wellington Tress Association telegram.
The health of the Hon. J. A. Millar, who is at present residing in Auckland, is Causing his friends some anxiety.
The Prime Minister’s son, Mr F. C. Massey, solicitor, of Auckland, is to leave for Trentham in about a week to join the reinforcements draft as quar-termaster-sergeant,
The condition of Mr .1. Marra, who is at present in Dr. Paget’s hospital, is quite satisfactory, he being reported to be progressing exceedingly well.
Advice has been received in Wellington that Private John Malinek, who at the outbreak of war was a resident of Petone, had been killed in action. He was a reservist and was proceeding Home to prepare to go to the front. His widow resides at Petone.
Hon. T. Mackenzie’s term as High Commissioner expires 'in August, but the probabilities are that he will be given an extended term. This would be following the precedents in the case of Mr W. P. Reeves and Sir W, HallJones.
A private letter from Egypt states that Major F. Chapman, of the Auckland Regiment of Mounted Rifles, with the Expeditionary Force, had the misfortune early in February to have two Angers blown off. Major Chapman was officer commanding the Waikato Regiment of Mounted Rifles in the Auckland Territorials.
It is understood that Mr T. Hutchinson will be appointed Magistrate in Milton and Lawrence districts (Otago), vice Mr E. W. Buxton, who has been transferred to the Bay of Islands. Mr Hutchinson was formerly stationed at Timaru, but he has been relieving Mr, Geo. Cruickshank at Invercargill during the past twelve months.
A very old colonist in the person of Mr Reuben White, passed away at Ids residence in Eltham on Tuesday afternoon, at the ripe age of 78 years. The la£e Mr White arrived in Auckland from the Old Country 57 years ago, and farmed in that district jfor some years. He was in the Maori war, and Was the recipient of a veteran’s medal. He came to Taranaki about 38 years ago and settled near Waitara, and some time later he came to Te Roti, where he farmed for some years, He was for some time a director of the Eltham Dgiry Company. The late Mr White is survived by his widow and one son (Mr C. White, Eltham), and four daughters (Mrs H. Sutherland, Te Awamutu; Mrs R. J. Linn, Normanby; Mrs J. L. Campbell, Eltham; and Mrs H. R. Jenkins, Eltham).
