DOUGLAS.

(From our own Correspondent)

A large gathering of residents of Douglas and surrounding district assembled in the Douglas Hall on Moilday evening in honor of Mr J. W. T. Jones, local schoolmaster, on the eve of his approaching marriage. Mr E. Walter (chairman of the School Committee) presided, and Miss Watkins (the bride elect), and her father and mother were also present. An excellent programme was provided by talent from Douglas, Huiroa, and Kiore, and was highly appreciated. The items were as follows: —The Misses Bredow, pianoforte duet; vocal solos by Mesdames Thomas and Respinger, Misses Young and Perrott, Messxs Beere Young, Cole, Todd, Stuart and Bredow ; duet, Mrs Thomas and Mrs Cole, club swinging, Miss Evans; recitations by the school children. Mrs Thomas and Messrs Pearson and Bredow played the accompaniments. After the programme a presentation of a handsome marble clock was presented to Mr Jones, inscribed, “Presented to Mi Jones by the residents of Douglas on the eve of his marriage.” The chairman, in making the presentation, referred to the good fellowship and feeling that existed between the teachers, parents, children, and residents, and Mr Jones 1 ’ good and efficient work at the school and willingness to render assistance in outside matters, on behalf of the residents, all of whom wished him and his future wife long life and happiness. Mr Jones, in reply, expressed his grateful appreciation of the presentation and honor conferred upon him. The large audience sang lustily, “For he’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Refreshments were partaken of, and the hall was cleared for dancing ,which concluded a delightful and pleasant gathering. Mrs Thomas, Messrs Pearson and Bredow played the accompaniments, and Mr A If. Needham acted as M.C.
