Petrograd, March 26
Official.—We carried by assault an important strongly fortified armoured position in Lupkow Pass. The Au.strians furiously counter-attacked, but our fire and bayonet charges partly annihilated them. The remainder retreated on certain positions. The Russians crossed the frontier, and are now in close touch with the enemy beyond Jurburg.
In the last sortie from Przemysl three Slav regiments were sent ahead, followed by four Hungarian regiments. On meeting the Russians' fire, the Slavs turned back, whereupon the Hungarians fired upon them. The outskirts of Przemysl have been converted into a vast cemetery, containing the graves of over forty thousand who were killed or who had died during the siege. The sanitary condition of the town is unspeakable. When the news of the capture was received at Petrograd, dense crowds thronged the streets, the Russian anthem rising in thunderous cadences. The people knelt on the pavements in the snow, offering thanksgiving prayers. The Xevski Prospect was blocked by the thousands of kneeling people.
