THE SINGAPORE RIOT. PARTICULARS OF THE UPRISING AND ITS SUPPRESSION. United Press Association. (Received 9-30 a.m.) Sydney, March 25. The steamer Mata ram from Singapore brings details of the recent rioting. It appears the trouble started at the Sanglin Barracks, outside the town, where fourteen Germans wore interned in charge of a mixed guard jof Native and white troops. There is lie doubt it was organised by the Germans, as one of the ring leaders 'of the mutineers who was afterwards 'shot, was found in possession of £IOO in German money. I It was intended to start at 4 in the .morning, but one of the white officers discovered the plot, causing the mutineers to act immediately. The officer while telephoning the news to Singapore was shot dead, and the Native guard then shot the white guard and advanced on the city, and about 20 whites were killed in the first half hour. i The first nows of the outbreak at Singapore was the arrival of a motor ear containing a gentleman and his wife, the former being dead and the wife wounded. Mn route they had been fired on and the husband then placed the wife at the bottom of the car and shielded her with bis own body. Volunteers were called out, and a

message sent-to a British warship, which landed a large party. I Fighting lasted all night, and next day French, Japanese, and Russian 'warships arrived and landed men. All male civilians capable of bearing arms wore called out, and the authorities Itook charge of several steamers, and (placed the women and children on board. The Rioters were eventually checked. i Numbers of the rioters crossed to Jahore, one boatload being drowned leu route. The Sultan of Jahore capItured most ofthe refugees and handed (them over to the Singapore authorities. Some of the interned Germans were !recaptured. One of those supposed to (be largely responsible for the outbreak is a .well-known business man, who has not been captured, and a reward of 3000 dollars is being offered fbr his arrest.
